As private business owners and founders, they generally believe significant returns are only made from creating new businesses, while they are often skeptical about the benefits of asset allocation models or even the notion that the public stock market can generate high returns on its own. Revisiting Asset Allocations

What it means for institutional investors: Coming back into the Nordic offices after the summer vacations, it’s time to revisit asset allocations and selection strategies. Investment legend John P. Calamos writes about lessons learned for asset allocations through a rough ride in the first half of 2025:

“While investors who stayed the course are likely happy, those who tried to time the market are likely feeling regret. As we have noted throughout the years, making short-term decisions often leads investors to capture the downside but miss the upside.

Another key lesson for investors is the importance of selectivity. We are in a complex and rapidly evolving environment. In this period of “creative destruction,” not all companies will be able to adapt and innovate”.

US Infrastructure is crumpling

What it means for institutional investors: There is a monumental funding gap within US Infrastructure: the investment needs are well above the capacity of the federal government, the states, and the municipalities.

Fortunately, private capital is also available for investments given an attractive expected combination of risks and returns; credit quality, stable cash-flows, and yields.

IMD recently held Investor Seminars in Stockholm, April 24^th and Copenhagen, April 25^th, 2025.

Golding Capital Partners, Calamos Investments, American Infrastructure Partners and Ascender Capital presented the investment strategies Private Equity Secondaries, Co-Investment Buyout, Convertible Securities, Real Estate/Infrastructure and listed equities in Asia.

Across the U.S., kids are sitting in freezing, molding, and all too often dangerous classrooms. Over 50 years old, primary schools for underprivileged families are falling apart. Worse: It provides the kids with poorer life skills. There are so many of these schools and education institutions; USD 568bn needed for renovation and modernization to solve the problem. It is the second-largest category of under-funded infrastructure in the U.S. Fortunately, for institutional investors always looking out opportunities, the Americans will mobilize through public-private partnership. Frontier Markets: A new dawn after a 12-year long night?

The risk of global investor flight in and out of frontier- and early emerging markets used to one of the biggest worries for developed market investors considering adding these markets to improve diversification and gain a better expected risk-return combination.

However, as seasoned frontier markets investors like Mattias Martinsson from Tundra Fonder has been saying for the past couple of years: No reason to fear investor flight, they have already left!

Investors, they often move in herds. There have been some good reasons to give up on this sub asset class, but it leaves opportunities for others now. The smart money could move in.

So, what will contrarian equity portfolio managers find now?

Growing countries with equity markets trading at all-time large discounts.
Fine companies trading at all-time large discounts to their sector peers in developed markets.
Many opportunities to find well-managed companies in modern, asset-light sectors and finance, staying clear of heavy industry and former state monopolies.

The sustainability agenda is alive also with Trump

Trump is back—but the sustainability agenda is alive and strong! Investors are busy analyzing the impacts of the new political agenda. According to a Calamos Investments team in Chicago, the green changes are here to stay, powered by strong factors, despite some headwinds. Quotes:

* Imported solar panels, EV batteries, and critical minerals wouldn’t be immune from the sweeping tariffs proposed by the president-elect.
* We do not discount the potential headwinds these changes could present but we believe the global growth mega trends supporting sustainable innovation are stronger.
* For example, the increasing significance of electrification, decarbonization, automation, and digitalization is undeniable.

Sustainable Infrastructure in a Safe Environment

Onshore wind, industrial water treatment, solar, battery storage, port terminals, and data centers.

These infrastructure assets can offer investors attractive risk returns, with an operational risk that can be sensibly managed.

There are extra yields available for smaller specialized infrastructure funds that don’t need to deploy EUR 250m for each project to invest billions burning in their pockets.
